Since a reader asked for this recipe, here it is:

1 10-oz jar maraschino cherries OR 6 oz (1/2 can) of Cheerwine soda
1/3 cup unsulfured molasses
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup “plain” BBQ sauce (I use Annie’s Organic original recipe brand)
2 Tbls white vinegar
1/8 tsp white pepper
1/8 tsp cayenne
a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
freshly ground black pepper
I Tbls liquid smoke (I use Colgin brand “natural mesquite)

If using the maraschino cherries, pour the contents of the jar over a strainer into a bowl to catch the juice. (The juice is what you want). If you live in NC or SC, you will probably be able to find Cheerwine soda and that will work in this recipe as well.

Mix together the juice or soda with all of the other ingredients in a saucepan and whisk while bringing to a boil. As soon as the brown sugar is dissolved, remove from the heat, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate until chilled. When ready to use, whisk all contents again until homogenous.
