While most “nice” restaurants jack up their prices exorbitantly on Valentine’s Day and offer such fare as lobster and truffles, I choose to cook at home. There were really nice organic, boneless turkey breast halves at the market this week. I pondered how to use the half I came home with and decided that the simpler the better—just season with herbs, salt, and pepper and roast in the oven. The side dishes are a bit out of the ordinary (after all, I didn’t want a Thanksgiving type meal tonight). The rice dish with its sweet and spicy components, and the other unusual accompaniments are enough to make this Valentine’s Day special enough for me.

Roasted turkey breast with herbs and seasonings
Basmati rice dressing with apples, onions, raisins, pecans, and Cajun seasoning
Brussels sprouts and carrots with crispy bacon bits and a splash of cider vinegar
House-made yeast bread

Blood orange wedges and pomegranate seeds
