Tonight, I revisit a menu that my mother prepared during the height of the summer, when there were numerous vegetables available in the garden. On those nights, everything was chopped or diced and put into a large stew pot to simmer together. Since we were a large family, she usually added other components to the meal, but all I ever really needed was the vegetable stew and the fresh bread. Indeed, that’s really all I remember about the meal! Sometimes there was a dessert offering at the table. But on those occasions when that wasn’t the case, we would often have a dish of ice cream later in the night as a treat.
