This is a wonderful winter soup which is easy to prepare and elegant with the addition of cream and wild rice. Take care to use the suggested spices very judiciously—there should be only a small hint of their flavor in the finished soup.  The addition of a small amount of sauteed shallots and celery helps cut the sweetness–the soup is not at all cloying. Not much else is needed to complete this vegetarian meal.
